Introduction

The Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute (PMI) is the most widely recognized project management credential. PMI launched an updated exam in July 2026, so many older study guides are now out of date. This guide covers eligibility, the current structure, and how to plan your application. Always confirm fees and rules on pmi.org, because they change.

Prerequisites

  • Some experience leading projects
  • A PMI account to apply

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Check who the PMP is for

The PMP suits people who lead or direct projects, in any industry, using predictive, agile, or hybrid approaches. It is a credential for experienced practitioners, not beginners. If you are early in your career, the CAPM (covered in a separate guide) is the entry-level PMI credential.

Step 2: Confirm the eligibility requirements

PMI's framework has paths by education. With a four-year degree you need about 36 months of experience leading projects within the last eight years. With a high school diploma or associate degree you need about 60 months. A degree from a GAC-accredited program shortens the experience requirement to about 24 months. You also need 35 hours of project management education, called contact hours, aligned to the exam content outline, or an active CAPM, which exempts you from them. PMI announced that rules for live training eligibility change on 1 December 2026, so read the current PMP handbook when you apply.

Step 3: Know the three exam domains

Following the July 2026 outline, PMI's published weights are People 33 percent, Process 41 percent, and Business Environment 26 percent. Before the update the weights were 42, 50, and 8 percent, so Business Environment is now a major area. People covers leading teams and stakeholders, Process covers delivery topics such as scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, and procurement, and Business Environment covers compliance, benefits and value, and organizational change.

Domain Weight (July 2026 outline)
People 33%
Process 41%
Business Environment 26%

Before July 2026: People 42% / Process 50% / Business Environment 8%

Step 4: Understand the exam format

Training providers report that the updated exam has 180 questions, of which 170 are scored, takes about 240 minutes with two breaks, and uses multiple choice, multiple response, matching, hotspot, and new case-study and graphic-based items. They also report that roughly 60 percent of questions involve agile or hybrid approaches. PMI does not publish a numeric passing score. Because these format details come from secondary sources, confirm them in the current PMP Examination Content Outline and handbook on pmi.org.

Step 5: Plan costs and the application

Budget for the exam fee, which PMI sets higher for non-members than members and which training providers report increased in August 2026, plus your training course and practice tests. Check the exact current figures on pmi.org, since fees differ by country and change over time. Apply online with your experience described by project, and be accurate, because PMI can audit applications and ask for verification from managers or sponsors. Approved applications give you one year to take the exam, with a limited number of attempts in that year.

Step 6: Maintain the credential

The PMP is valid for three years. To renew, you earn professional development units, PDUs, through learning, giving back, and working in the profession, and PMI has historically required 60 PDUs per cycle, plus a renewal fee. Confirm the current PDU categories and amounts on pmi.org, because PMI revised its talent triangle in recent years. Start logging PDUs early so renewal is easy.

FAQs

I started studying with a 2021-outline book. Is it still useful?
Much of the content is still valid, but domain weights, agile and hybrid emphasis, and the Business Environment domain changed. Add the July 2026 outline and a current practice exam to cover the gaps.
Do I need the CAPM before the PMP?
No. It is optional. Holding an active CAPM exempts you from the 35 contact hours, but it does not replace the experience requirement.

Summary

The PMP needs verified project experience plus 35 contact hours, and the July 2026 exam weights People 33, Process 41, and Business Environment 26 percent. Confirm fees and format on pmi.org, and earn PDUs to renew every three years.
