Introduction

Machine learning (ML) is a way of building software that learns patterns from data instead of following rules a programmer wrote by hand. This first lesson of the seven-part ML course explains the core ideas, the vocabulary, and the workflow every ML project follows, then sets up your Python environment.

Prerequisites

  • Basic Python (variables, functions, lists)
  • Python 3.10 or newer installed

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Compare traditional programming and machine learning

In traditional programming you write rules and feed in data to get answers. In machine learning you feed in data and known answers, and the algorithm works out the rules. Those learned rules are called a model, and you then use the model on new data it has never seen.

Step 2: Learn the main types of learning

Supervised learning learns from labeled examples, such as emails marked spam or not spam, and covers classification (predict a category) and regression (predict a number). Unsupervised learning finds structure in unlabeled data, such as grouping similar customers. Reinforcement learning learns by trial and error from rewards. This course focuses on supervised learning, which powers most business applications.

Step 3: Know the vocabulary

Features are the input columns the model uses, such as age or income. The label (or target) is what you want to predict. Training is fitting the model to data. Inference (or prediction) is using the trained model on new data. A dataset is split so the model is judged on examples it did not train on.

Step 4: Follow the ML workflow

Almost every project follows the same loop: define the problem and success metric, collect and clean data, split it into training and test sets, train a model, evaluate it, improve it, deploy it, and monitor it in production. Most of the real effort goes into data preparation and evaluation, not into choosing an algorithm.

Step 5: Set up your environment

Create a virtual environment and install the libraries used throughout this course: NumPy and pandas for data, scikit-learn for models, and matplotlib for charts.

python -m venv .venv
# macOS / Linux
source .venv/bin/activate
# Windows (PowerShell)
# .venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1

pip install numpy pandas scikit-learn matplotlib

FAQs

Do I need advanced math to start with machine learning?
Not to get started. Libraries like scikit-learn handle the math, and you can build working models with basic Python. Statistics and linear algebra become more important as you tune models and interpret results.
What is the difference between AI, machine learning, and deep learning?
AI is the broad goal of machines doing tasks that seem intelligent. Machine learning is a way of achieving it by learning from data. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses neural networks with many layers.

Summary

Machine learning learns rules from data. You supply features and labels, train a model, evaluate it on unseen data, and then deploy and monitor it. Next you will load and clean real data with pandas.
