AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) Study Guide
Introduction
The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is the starting point for the AWS certification path. It validates broad cloud knowledge, not deep technical skill, so it suits beginners, managers, and sales and support staff as well as aspiring engineers. The facts below come from AWS's official certification page and exam guide, checked in October 2026.
Prerequisites
- No IT background required
- A free AWS account helps for hands-on practice
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Learn the exam facts
The current exam is CLF-C02. It has 65 questions, of which 50 are scored and 15 are unscored, in 90 minutes. Question types are multiple choice and multiple response. The score is scaled from 100 to 1000 and the passing score is 700. The exam fee is 100 USD, and it can be taken at a Pearson VUE center or online proctored. The certification is valid for three years. AWS recommends up to six months of exposure to the AWS Cloud.
Step 2: Study by domain weight
Spend your time where the points are. Cloud Technology and Services is the largest domain, followed by Security and Compliance. The guide stresses that scoring is compensatory, so you pass by your overall score and do not need to pass each domain separately, and there is no penalty for guessing.
Domain Weight
Cloud Concepts 24%
Security and Compliance 30%
Cloud Technology and Services 34%
Billing, Pricing, and Support 12%Step 3: Master the concepts
Understand the benefits of the cloud, such as elasticity, global reach, and pay-as-you-go pricing, plus the Well-Architected Framework pillars and the Cloud Adoption Framework. Know the shared responsibility model thoroughly: AWS secures the cloud itself, and you secure what you put in it. Know Regions, Availability Zones, and edge locations.
Step 4: Know the core services and security tools
Learn what each core service is for, at a high level: EC2 and Lambda for compute, S3 and EBS for storage, RDS and DynamoDB for databases, VPC and Route 53 for networking, CloudFront for content delivery. For security learn IAM users, roles, and policies, MFA, least privilege, and the purpose of tools such as GuardDuty, Inspector, and Shield. Practice by creating an S3 bucket, an IAM user with limited permissions, and a small EC2 instance, then delete them.
Step 5: Understand billing and support
Know the pricing models: on-demand, Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, and Spot. Learn the free tier, consolidated billing, and tools such as the Pricing Calculator, Cost Explorer, Budgets, and tagging. Know the differences between the AWS Support plans at a high level, and where to get help. Set a budget alert on your own account on day one so practice never surprises you with a bill.
Step 6: Follow a 4-week plan and use official prep
Week 1 cloud concepts and the shared responsibility model; week 2 security and core services; week 3 services review, billing, and support; week 4 practice questions and weak areas. AWS publishes an Exam Prep Plan on Skill Builder with official practice question sets, an official practice exam, and hands-on resources, so start there. After passing, AWS gives a 50 percent discount voucher for your next AWS exam.
FAQs
- Do I need Cloud Practitioner before the Associate exams?
- No. AWS does not require it. It is a good warm-up if you are new to the cloud, and the exam voucher discount makes the next exam cheaper.
- How do I renew it?
- Pass the latest Cloud Practitioner exam, or pass any Associate or Professional AWS exam, which also recertifies it. Check AWS's recertification page for the current options.
Summary
